About Wasagamack Anisininew Nation

A proud Anisininew Nation and member of the Island Lake Tribal Council (Anisininew Okimawin), focused on reclaiming our sovereignty and returning to Mino Bimaadiziwin (the Good Life)

Wasagamack: In Oji-Cree, ᐗᓴᑲᒪᐣᐠ means 'At the Bay', reflecting the curved shape of our bay. In February 2024 the Nation changed its name from Wasagamack First Nation to Wasagamack Anisininew Nation. We were once part of the Island Lake Band, which signed the adhesion to Treaty 5 on 13 August 1909, and in 1969 became one of four separate communities.

Population: As of June 2021, the Nation had 2,229 registered members, with 1,990 living on reserve.

Location: Our main community is on the western shore of Island Lake in Manitoba. The Nation has three reserves: Feather Rapids, Naytawunkank and Wasagamack. The community can be reached by boat, ice road or air, and Thompson is 281 km away.

Culture: We speak Anisininew and English, and our local dialect is Baswinaksimon, meaning 'Island Lake/Smooth Rock People'. We share an Anisininew identity with the other Island Lake nations. Our school, opened in 2020, serves about 700 students from K4 to grade 12 and offers Land-Based Learning.
